You Never Regret the Swim plays in tandem with Drink Up the Moon
Like so many around Ireland, I swam very often during the winter of 2020/21. I was feeling creatively stifled at the time, so I brought my iPhone 8 into the water at Salthill with me on each swim. My diary is full of entries like; Nov 23, "Swam at noon with Jenny. Wild dark weather. Normally wouldn't go out in that, but great with Jenny, great motivation. Great to swim on days like that because you realize how capable you are,"; Dec 22, "Gorgeous swim. Body tingled. Legs felt really spicy in the water."; Jan 24, SWAM! Sunny! Frozen puddles. The sky was reflecting on the sea. Clouds in the sea. So gorgeous and some of the most dreamy footage I've recorded yet,"; Apr 11, "Swam in the sun in hailstones, was very special."
Everything about the project was good for me. I'm forever grateful to my friend Gav Clarke who gave me the motto "You never regret the swim" one February around 15 years ago. It forever helps me to hop in.
The music for this film is based around using field recordings and my voice. I started working on embodiment and deep listening practices with some friends during lockdown. The practices were exactly what I needed and they felt like a natural and refreshing extension of my work. Practicing singing and chanting allows me to resonate with my own body and breath, and respond to my environment. It's such a nice way to make music. The water sounds are all recorded locally on my field recorder and with an underwater microphone.
