Earth Rising at IMMA 2025
Bearing Witness | Holding Space | Making Injury Visible, which was selected for IMMA's Earth Rising Festival's Open Call 2025.
The festival took place September 12 - 14, 2025 on the grounds of the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
Bearing Witness | Holding Space | Making Injury Visible is an urgent project from Interface Inagh that delves into the environmental and cultural repercussions of offshore wind farms on Ireland’s coastal communities. Led by artists Jane Cassidy and Laney Mannion, ecologist Marie Louise Heffernan, and curator Alannah Robins, the initiative focuses on the proposed wind farm at Sceirde Rocks in Connemara.
Interface Inagh’s contribution unfolds across two distinct rooms:
The Madden Room features an immersive audiovisual installation by Jane Cassidy. The walls shimmer with dappled projections of the precious waters of the Aran Islands, while a rich soundscape of music and field recordings envelops the space. At the heart of the room, three pedestals hold intimate video sculptures that share personal testimonies from Connemara residents—drawn from their formal objections to An Bord Pleanála regarding the Sceirde Rocks development.
The Board Room, led by Laney Mannion, invites active participation and conversation. Questioning whose voices shape the narrative, the space encourages visitors to engage in woodcut workshops and interactive sculpture. Through hands-on experiences, participants are drawn into a broader conversation about Ireland’s biodiversity and the impact of offshore wind farms—amplifying local perspectives and fostering collective dialogue.
Reflective and thought-provoking, the project celebrates the unique richness of Ireland’s marine ecosystems—true jewels of its biodiversity. At the same time, it critically examines the industrialisation of our seas. Amplifying the voices of coastal communities, it encourages a national conversation about sustainable climate action that protects both ecosystems and cultural heritage.
