The Sound Nest

A collaboration with That's Life (Brothers of Charity). We worked on this project over a year to develop animated graphic notation for the music group Melody Rainbow.

That’s Life is a Galway city arts program that offers adults with intellectual disabilities opportunities to discover and realize their artistic potential by participating in a wide range of high-quality arts programs. Melody Rainbow are a music ensemble that performs on Soundnests, resonant metal drums that are tuned in harmony with each other.

The 5-person ensemble creates music by following animated graphic scores to guide the music. Graphic scores are a type of graphic notation that represents music through visual symbols. The animation uses colours and shapes to denote harmony, musical patterns, tempo and rhythm, etc. The notes on the drums are color-coded so that musicians can identify which notes to perform when the corresponding colours occur in the animation.

We've made some beautiful music together!

Funded by the Arts Council of Ireland Agility Award.
